Minister for Justice Michael McDowell has launched a robust defence of his plan to restrict the right to silence in an effort to crack down on gang crime.

The restrictions have come in for major criticism from legal and civil liberties groups, but Mr McDowell was unapologetic at the annual conference of the Association of Garda Sergeants and Inspectors last night.
