More than €13,000 awarded in five discrimination cases

More than €13,000 in compensation has been awarded to victims of discrimination in the latest tranche of rulings published today by the Equality Tribunal.

The tribunal has disclosed details of 16 decisions made last month, five of which were upheld and the other 11 dismissed.

In one case, the maximum award of €6,000 was given to a Traveller woman when a Tralee primary school refused to enrol her disabled son.

The tribunal found that the board of management based its enrolment decision on the fact that the woman had filed discrimination complaints against the previous school her son had attended.

Elsewhere, the body has also ordered the Samba soccer school to pay €750 to a man who took a case on behalf of his disabled son, while €6,000 was also awarded in two separated cases relating to workplace equality.

The 11 dismissed cases, meanwhile, included five taken by members of the Travelling community against Clare County Council.
