Software firm axes 200 jobs
Two hundred jobs were axed at a software firm in Limerick tonight.
Thomson Scientific have confirmed the 200 redundancies.
Six hundred jobs are at risk there sparking fears of an unemployment crisis in the region.
But Micheal Martin, Enterprise Minister, said workers would be given every support required if the worst fears are realised.
“We will be there to support the workers in any way we can into the future and state agencies will be asked of course to support in terms of whatever announcement may emanate from the company,” he said.
Thomson Scientific, which develops software for the legal, financial, science and healthcare sectors said 200 redundancies should be finalised in the next 18 months.
Last month management said some operations were being moved to India to cut costs.
In a statement company bosses thanked employees in Limerick: “The decision to transfer operations from Limerick to India is in no way a reflection on them and the high level of commitment and dedication that they have given to the company.
“We face stiff competition from aggressive competitors keen to grow their market share. In order to continue to maintain our place in the market and to secure the future of our business we need to take action now.”
