A new report is expected to recommend the introduction of new measures to improve the safety of gardaí in siege situations.

The report from the Garda Inspectorate follows on from the Barr Tribunal findings into the fatal shooting of John Carthy in Abbeylara in 2000.

Around 40 recommendations will be made about the deployment and training of gardaí to handle armed confrontations.

Media reports indicate the Garda Inspectorate report will be brought before the Government on Tuesday.

The recommendations will address areas such as the training of gardaí and officer safety.
