Man dies after falling ill in garda cell in Kildare
A 29-year-old man has died in hospital in Co Kildare after falling ill while in garda custody in Naas.
The Gardaí say they became concerned about the man's health at around 5am this morning and called and a doctor an ambulance.
CPR was administered and the prisoner was taken to Naas Hospital, but he was pronounced dead a short time later.
Gardaí say the man had been found in an unconscious state during a drugs raid on the NUI campus in Maynooth earlier yesterday and was taken to Blanchardstown Hospital for treatment.
However, he later discharged himself and was arrested at around 10pm under the Misuse of Drugs Act.
He was brought to the garda station in Naas and questioned until midnight before being put in a cell.
Gardaí say it was here that he fell ill before he died.
An investigation led by a garda officer from outside the division has been appointed to examine all aspects of the case.
