A number of houses were evacuated in west Dublin overnight after a hoax bomb was found under a car in the Blanchardstown area.

The army was called in after the suspicious object was discovered on Sheepmore Avenue.

A controlled explosion was carried out at around 4.30am, but the device was later declared a hoax.

Gardaí investigating the matter are carrying out technical examinations on the package today.
