Minister for Enterprise Micheal Martin has said he does not believe Motorola's announcement of 350 possible job losses in Cork reflects the state of the Irish economy.

The company announced yesterday that it was considering ending all engineering activities at its plant in the Mahon area of the city.

Asked about the matter today, Mr Martin denied the decision would damage Ireland's competitiveness in the global market.

He also promised that every effort would be made to help the Cork workers find alternative employment.
