DNA found on alleged victim matches acused

The trial of a Lithuanian man charged with raping a Russian woman in Waterford has heard that swabs taken from the alleged victim matched his DNA profile.

The 20-year-old man has pleaded not guilty at the Central Criminal Court to rape and sexual assault of the 27-year-old woman, making a threat to kill her and assaulting her causing her harm on March 19, 2006 at an apartment in Waterford.

Dr Dorothy Maxwell told Mr Shane Murphy SC (with Ms Anne Rowland BL), prosecuting, that DNA on swabs taken from the thigh and vagina of the alleged victim matched the DNA profile of the accused.

She said the chance of an unrelated person having the same DNA profile was 1:1,000 million (one in 1,000 million).

Ms Maxwell told the court that she had been employed by the DNA section of the Forensic Science Laboratory for over ten years assisting gardaí in solving crimes.

The trial continues in legal argument before Mr Justice Barry White.
