A 22-year-old man has been shot dead in a gangland-style assassination in the Clondalkin area of Dublin.

A 22-year-old man has been shot dead in a gangland-style assassination in the Clondalkin area of Dublin.

The shooting, the first gun murder of 2007, happened at a house on Lealand Road just before 10.30pm.

The victim has been named locally as Damien Dowdall, who was from the area and was not believed to be deeply involved in crime.

Two gunmen called to the front door of Mr Dowdall's girlfriend's house last night before forcing their way into the sitting room and confronting the victim.

They shot him twice and then fled the scene on foot in the direction of St Cuthbert's Park.

A full murder investigation is underway and the scene has been sealed off for forensic examination.

The state pathologist has been informed.

Gardaí are investigating a motive for the attack and are also appealing for anyone who was in the area to come forward with any information they may have.
