Grants worth €6m have been earmarked to support people with disabilities across Ireland, it was revealed today.

Funding has been approved for 64 voluntary and non-profit organisations nationwide that will assist the disabled to live in their own homes.

The grants, under the Independent Living Support Programme, enable people to maintain independent living by funding a wide range of new equipment.

“This Government is committed to improving and making a practical difference to the lives of people with disabilities, to promoting their integration into society, to changing attitudes and to combating the discrimination and poverty they experience,” said Frank Fahey, Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

“This funding will enable these 64 organisations to deliver a wide range of new equipment including assistive technology, vehicles and supports to enhance independent living which I believe will have an immediate and positive impact on the lives of people with disabilities.”
