Warm political reaction to Sinn Féin’s decision on policing

There has been a warm welcome to last night's decision by Sinn Féin's National Executive to take the next step towards policing.

Following six hours of discussions in Dublin yesterday, the party's Ard Comhairle backed the motion put forward by party president Gerry Adams.

Now, if the two Governments and the DUP respond positively, a special Árd Fheis on policing will be held in January.

Taoiseach Bertie Ahern last night described the decision as a landmark and timely one.

He said that once all parties honour their commitments, 2007 should offer a whole new political landscape in the North.

Both Fine Gael and Labour also welcomed the decision, with Enda Kenny says it confirms Sinn Féin's support for the PSNI.

While, Pat Rabitte says the move is potentially very significant, but it is now time for the DUP to issue a clear and frank statement.

“There will be some people dragging their heels on the basis that they need more time to see if Sinn Féin is truly democratic, is truly dedicated to the democratic arena, and to support for the rule of law,” he said.

While announcing the decision last night however, Gerry Adams was critical of the role of the Irish Government.

“The Irish Government's role was very limited and has been so for some time, and that is also very disappointing,” he said.
