Man due in Galway court after assault on garda sergeant

A man is due in court in Galway tomorrow to face charges of assaulting a garda on the Aran Islands in the early hours of this morning.

The local man was arrested after an assault on a sergeant at a pub on Inishmore at around 3am.

Extra gardaí from Clifden and Salthill had to be drafted onto the island by boat to deal with the aftermath of the incident.

The injured garda was taken to University College Hospital in Galway before being discharged later in the day.
