Amicus vows to oppose any move to break up VHI

The Amicus trade union has said it will strongly oppose any plans to break up the VHI in the wake of yesterday's decision by BUPA to exit the Irish market.

Reports this morning say the Competition Authority will recommend the move in a report due to be presented to the Government shortly.

However, Amicus, which represents 800 VHI workers, says it is totally opposed to any break-up of the company and believes the move would not benefit consumers.

"It's speculation at this point," spokesman Colm Quinlan said. "We're watching it very, very closely and we will take a very strong position in opposition to that proposal if that proposal emerges."
