Gardaí issue appeal in Kilkenny postmaster case
Passengers on a Bus Éireann bus could hold vital clues to the murder of Kilkenny postmaster Alan Cunniffe, it emerged today.
The 32-year-old was shot dead by an armed raider whom he chased from his John’s Green post office last Friday.
Investigating gardaí from Kilkenny Garda Station today appealed for information from passengers on the Bus Éireann service to Kilkenny which left Busarus in Dublin City centre at 9am on the day of the killing.
The bus stopped at Naas, Kilcullen, Ballylinan, Cretyard, Castlecomer and Carlow town on its route to the Marble City.
A Chinese national, Shu Shen, of no fixed abode, is currently in custody in connection with the murder of Mr Cunniffe and the robbery of his post office.
The funeral of Mr Cunniffe took place at St Canice’s Church in Kilkenny yesterday.
Staff at post offices around the country observed a minute’s silence before closing for an hour as a mark of respect.
A Book of Condolence has been opened at the main post office in Kilkenny and at the GPO in Dublin.
Mr Cunniffe, who was shot on Wolfe Street on Friday afternoon, was taken to St Luke’s Hospital in the city where he died a short time later.
