A 33-year-old man was in custody in the North tonight after the discovery of two bombs in Antrim.

The pipe bombs, described by police as "viable devices" were discovered at a house in the Rathmore Gardens area of the town.

The bombs were uncovered during a series of searches of houses in the area.

A number of homes were evacuated while army bomb disposal experts made the devices safe during a security operation.

They were later taken away for forensic examination.
