A 24-year-old man has admitted stabbing a fellow inmate to death at Mountjoy prison in January 2004.

Stephen Wall from Shankill pleaded guilty at the Central Criminal Court to the manslaughter, but not guilty to the murder of Alan Green at the prison on January 27.

That plea was accepted by the State and Mr Justice Paul Carney remanded Wall in custody for sentence on December 18. He also ordered the drawing up of a Victim Impact Report.

The body of Alan Green (aged 30), from Bray, Co Wicklow, was discovered shortly after midday, when prisoners were collecting their lunch. He had a serious stab wound to the chest.

He was rushed to the Mater Hospital but attempts by ambulance staff to save his life failed and he was pronounced dead later that afternoon.

In April last year, Stephen Wall, who appeared in court today dressed in a blue and white checked shirt and jeans, was formally charged over the killing.

The victim, Alan Green, had been serving a 12- month sentence for unlawful possession of drugs, and was due to be released two months after he was killed.

He had been in and out of prison many times, mostly for minor offences.
