Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern today welcomed the end of Saddam Hussein's trial, but reiterated Ireland's opposition to the death penalty.

Minister for Foreign Affairs Dermot Ahern today welcomed the end of Saddam Hussein's trial, but reiterated Ireland's opposition to the death penalty.

He said that along with the European Union, Ireland has made it clear to the Iraqi authorities of that the EU opposes the courts applying the death sentence.
