Waterford murder trial gets underway

The trial has started today, at the Central Criminal Court, of a 61-year-old Scottish man accused of the murder of a Waterford woman two years ago.

Samuel Jenning,s who lived in Ashtown, Kilmacthomas, Waterford, pleaded not guilty to the murder of Mary Walsh (aged 54) of Glendalligan, Kilrossanty, on a date unknown between August 30 and September 1, 2004. The body of the mother of two was found in the boot of a car on August 31.

Speaking for the prosecution, Sean Gillane BL, told the jury of 10 men and two women that they would hear that Mary 'Mamie' Walsh had worked for the Provident Personal Creditors company.

As part of her job she arranged personal loans for people as well as collecting and lodging loan repayments.

Mr Gillane said that the jury would hear that Mrs Walsh was due to meet Samuel Jennings on August 30, 2004. He told the jury: "You will hear that after August 30 he had seen a significant improvement in his financial condition and lodgements to bank accounts associated with him."

The case continues before Mr Justice Barry White.
