IMC presents latest assessment to Irish and British govts

The body set up to monitor paramilitary ceasefires in the North has presented its latest report to the Irish and British governments today.

In its last assessment, the Independent Monitoring Commission said it was firmly of the view that the IRA was living up to its commitment to end all illegal activity.

The conclusion was criticised by the DUP, which is refusing to share power with Sinn Fein due to what it says is ongoing IRA activity.

The unionist party wants the IMC to say whether it believes any IRA members were behind the murder of British spy Denis Donaldson in April.

Dublin and London will be hoping the latest report, which is expected to be published on Wednesday, will encourage the DUP to change its stance on power-sharing by the November 24 devolution deadline.
