Man charged after Limerick firearms seizure

A 20-year-old Limerick man, has appeared before a special court sitting on charges connected to a firearms and ammunition seizure in the city yesterday.

Peter O'Brien from Delmege Park, Moyross appeared before a special sitting of Limerick District Court this morning.

The 20-year-old is charged with possession of a Remington Bolt Action Rifle and possession of 309 rounds of ammunition at Delmege Park, Moyoss, on yesterday's date, contrary to The Firearms Act 1964.

Detective Garda Sean Lynch told the court that the accused replied: " I have nothing to say" when he was formally charged at Mayorstone garda station yesterday.

Inspector Ann Marie McMahon said the State had no objection to bail provided certain conditions were imposed.

Judge Aeneas McCarthy ordered that the accused stay out of the Moyross area and that he not associate himself with anybody involved in the present feud in the area.

Judge McCarthy also said that Mr O'Brien was to have "no contact whatsoever with the McCarthy Dundon gang".

The accused was ordered to reside at an address outside of Moyross, to sign on daily at an approved garda station and to observe a curfew between 10pm and 7am.

Judge McCarthy remanded Mr McCarthy in custody with consent to bail until Tuesday, on his own bond of €1,000 and an independent surety of €5,000.

Meanwhile, an 18-year-old youth also arrested following yesterday morning's garda raids is still in custody.

A second 18-year-old and a man in his 40's have been released from custody and are due to appear in court on Tuesday on other charges connected to the searches.

Up to 40 gardaí and plain clothes officers assisted by the garda helicopter and the garda plane, were involved in the raids carried out in the Moyross area of Limerick city.

Two rifles and two sawn off shot guns were seized along with 309 rounds of ammunition in the planned searches, which were carried out as part of Operation Anvil.
