Family relieved at release of Irish aid worker from kidnap ordeal

The family of the Irish Red Cross worker who was kidnapped in Ethiopia are delighted at news of his release.

41-year-old Sligo man Donal O'Suilleabhain was abducted along with a local colleague by a gang of armed men near the Somali border on Monday.

It is thought that the gang believed them to be foreign oil workers, even though they were travelling in a clearly marked Red Cross vehicle.

Foreign Minisiter Dermot Ahern has welcomed the news and is thanking Irish diplomats in the area for their efforts.

Chairman of the Irish Red Cross David Andrews has said he is pleased with the outcome and is also thanking everyone involved in the negotiations.

Donal's father, Briain said his family are hugely relieved at the news.

"We're delighted and excited,” he said. “We're having a drink now to celebrate. He rang us as soon as he got out. We were the first people he rang. It’s wonderful news.”
