EPA to deny Wicklow dump application

The Environmental Protection Agency has confirmed its decision to refuse permission for the construction of a landfill at the site of one of Ireland's most controversial illegal dumps.

Brownfield Restoration had sought permission to turn the dump in Whitestown, Co Wicklow, into an authorised landfill.

However, the EPA refused permission for the move earlier this year and instead ordered the clean-up of the site.

Confirming the decision today, it said the site was not suitable for landfill and needed to be cleaned up to prevent significant environmental pollution.

Brownfield will now be required to dig up, process and dispose of any potentially polluting waste.

The company will also have to monitor and manage any contaminated emissions of water, dust and gas during the clean-up.
