An Irish aid worker attached to the Red Cross has been kidnapped by gunmen in Ethiopia.

Sligo man Donal O'Suilleabhain was kidnapped along with an Ethiopian colleague two days ago in the eastern border region of the country, known as the Somali Regional State.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it has been in contact with his family and is offering all possible consular assistance to them.

Both the department and the International Red Cross say they are deeply concerned about the incident.

However, neither of the victims are understood to have suffered physical harm during the kidnapping.
