Harney resigns as leader of PDs

Tánaiste Mary Harney has resigned as leader of the Progressive Democrats announcing the move at a press conference this evening.

She also intends to step down as Tánaiste but hopes to stay on as Minister for Health to 'see through' the reforms she set in motion.

Minister for Justice Michael McDowell is the favourite to take her place.
