New appeal in 'gangland' murder investigation

Gardaí investigating a gangland-style killing in Dublin’s south inner city today issued a fresh appeal for information about the murder.

Wayne Zambra was shot dead in the early hours of Saturday, August 19, as he sat in a car in Cameron Street with another man.

A garda spokesman said detectives want to speak to a male taxi driver who picked up a fare outside the nearby Morrissey’s pub in Cork Street between 12.50am and 1.20am on the day of the killing.

Mr Zambra (aged 21) from Lourdes Road, Maryland, was shot dead as he sat in his Honda CRV car after two men, both of whom are believed to have been armed with handguns, opened fire.

Five shots were discharged into Mr Zambra’s vehicle, with two of them fatally wounding him in the head and another wounding his companion in the leg.

Mr Zambra was taken by ambulance to St James’s Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The first officers to arrive at the murder scene arrested two men nearby but both were released without charge and have been cleared of any involvement in the killing.

The murder of Mr Zambra led to fears of a fresh outbreak of gangland violence in the city.

A garda spokesman appealed for anyone with information about the killing to contact the incident Room at Kevin Street Garda Station on 01-6669432.
