Man in custody in relation to Mountjoy death

A 23-year-old man remains in garda custody this morning after he was arrested in connection with the death of an inmate at Mountjoy Prison yesterday morning.

Twenty-one-year-old Tallaght man Gary Douch was found beaten and strangled to death in a cell where he had been placed the previous night after requesting special protection.

The man detained in connection with the killing was also in the same cell and was arrested at the prison yesterday by gardaí investigating the death.

Reports this morning say he is from the Coolock area and is awaiting trial for robbery.

He also reportedly spent time at the Central Mental Hospital in recent days and was only being held at Mountjoy until a suitable bed became available.
