Girl, nine, killed in car crash

A nine-year-old girl died tonight when a car in which she was a passenger overturned in Co Longford.

The single vehicle incident occurred at Cloonturk, on the Longford to Kilashee road, at 5.30pm.

A Garda spokesman said: “The driver, and another passenger were taken to Mullingar General Hospital, but they are not believed to be seriously injured.

“Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact investigating gardaí in Longford Garda Station.”

It is the second road fatality in Co Longford today.

A male pedestrian, 22, died earlier when he was struck by a car at Carrickboy shortly after 2am.
