Teenagers quizzed after Bulgarian bar manager stabbed
Two Irish teenagers were tonight being questioned by Bulgarian police after a bar manager was stabbed in a drunken brawl at a resort on the Black Sea.
The incident occurred at 4am at the popular Sunny Beach when a group of tourists started shifting chairs from a closed restaurant.
The manager confronted the holidaymakers but was attacked by them. He was struck first with a purse before being hit with a bottle and stabbed in the abdomen.
A 15-year-old boy and his 19-year-old sister, believed to be from Dublin, were detained by local police.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed two people were being questioned.
“We are aware of an incident involving two Irish citizens at the Sunny Beach resort in Bulgaria,” she said.
“We are in touch with the individuals and the families involved offering them consular assistance and we will be in touch with police and Bulgarian authorities.”
Department officials in the Irish Embassy in Sofia are involved.
The bar manager was taken to hospital for treatment but his condition is not thought to be life threatening.
It is understood the pair have had their passports seized.
