Youths questioned after Orange parade clashes

Four youths were being questioned today over clashes at an Orange Order march that left two people injured.

A police officer and civilian were both hurt after trouble flared at the parade in Glengormley, Co Antrim last night.

Marchers claimed a crowd opposed to the Mini-Twelfth event hurled missiles.

Albert Steele, deputy district master of Carnmoney Orange Lodge, said: “There was a barrage of golf balls, stones, bottles with urine in them and paint bombs.

“One of the bands got splattered with paint, the district master got hit three times, twice with golf balls and a brick on the back of the leg.”

Police said the violence broke out as the parade passed by Church Crescent in the village.

Both a mob who had gathered and followers of the march threw missiles, according to a police spokesman.

Order was quickly restored with the help of community representatives from both sides.

One juvenile was arrested at the scene and three others a short time later.

Neither of the injuries are believed to be life threatening.

The police spokesman added: “Newtownabbey police condemn the actions of a small number of people on both sides of this disorder who were intent on causing trouble.”
