Poll shows Irish in favour of laws to protect human embryos

The Pro Life campaign is releasing a poll showing that a majority Irish people are in favour of legislation to protect human embryos.

The poll, carried out by IMS, shows that 55% of people agree that the Dáil should enshrine the protection of the human embryo in Irish law.

14% of those polled do not want legislation, while 31% of people say they do not know.

Pro Life spokesperson Professor William Binchy says the poll shows that Ireland should take a stronger stand against EU funding for embryonic stem cell research.

He said today, “We think it's important that the protection of all human life be, essentially, a core value of the EU.

“And we're not satisfied with the Government’s argument that in Ireland we won’t engage in this practice, but we're not going to stop other countries doing so.”

Mr. Binchy added: “It's not a question of stopping other countries, the real question here is whether EU money should be provided for the destruction of human life.”
