More non-science funding needed, say USI
The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) has called on the Government to match its commitment to put €3.8bn into scientific research with a separate increase in funding for non-science courses.
“USI is pleased that the Government appears to recognise the importance of supporting scientific research,” said USI president Tony McDonnell. “But ministers must guarantee that adequate funding will likewise follow students undertaking or contemplating studies in the humanities and social sciences, whether at undergraduate or postgraduate level.
“USI believes that careers in the humanities and social sciences – not to mention advanced research in these areas – are equally essential to the success of our knowledge economy.”
