Thousands gather for Haughey's State funeral

Our Lady of Consolation Church in Dublin is packed to capacity for the State funeral of former Taoiseach Charles Haughey.

Two thousand mourners have gathered inside the church, with 500 seats reserved for dignitaries including the President Mary McAleese, Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, government ministers and scores of former and current politicians from all political parties.

The remainder of the seats are being taken by members of the public, some of whom queued since early this morning.

Thousands more are gathered outside, with big screens erected so they can watch the service.

Flags have been flying at half mast and books of condolence have been open around the country since Mr Haughey lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday morning.

His brother Fr Owen Haughey is the principal celebrant at today's funeral Mass and is joined by the Archbishop of Dublin, Dr Diarmuid Martin.

Among those providing readings are Fianna Fáil TD Brian Lenihan and Mr Haughey's daughter Eimear.

Brendan Kennelly is to read a poem at the mass, while Finbar Fury will perform the Lonesome Boatman.

Mr Haughey will be buried at St Fintan's Cemetery in Sutton, with current Taoiseach and Fianna Fáil leader Bertie Ahern giving the graveside oration.
