Down: Families of six shot dead in 1994 call for inquiry

The niece of the oldest victim of the Troubles in the North has called for a full public inquiry into claims that he was murdered by a police informer.

Moira Casement's uncle, Barney, was 87 when he and five others were shot dead as they watched Ireland play Italy on TV in a bar in Loughinisland, Co. Down, during the 1994 World Cup.

The six families spoke publicly for the first time today of their belief that the police protected the murderers.

Moira Casement explained why it had taken so long to come forward: “At the time of the massacre we were in no position to question - we were so shocked and grieving and didn’t know any better,” she said.

“We were totally shocked and disgusted by the recent revelations. We were not kept fully informed. In fact, we were fobbed off. We need closure.”
