Massive forest fire brought under control in Derry

Firefighters in Co Derry have succeeded in controlling a massive fire that has burned through 40 acres of forest since yesterday afternoon.

The fire was reported at around 3pm yesterday at Broughderg Forest near Draperstown.

Around 100 firefighters were dispatched to tackle the blaze and finally managed to bring it under control at around 8.30am today.

Nobody was injured during the operation, which was hampered by strong winds, the difficult terrain and a lack of water supplies due to the recent dry weather.

The cause of the fire is still not known.
