Police in the North are today investigating the sudden death of a one-year-old boy.

It is understood the toddler died in the Currynierin area of Derry yesterday.

A PSNI spokeswoman said inquiries are continuing and a post mortem examination will be carried out.

The boy's death was reported at around 10pm yesterday.

Martin Reilly, SDLP councillor for the Waterside area, said: “This is a deeply tragic accident and our sympathy goes immediately to this child’s family.

“The entire community is in a state of shock and this incident shows how easily fatal accidents in the home can occur.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time.”

A PSNI spokesman said: “As a result of a post-mortem examination, police do not believe the death of a 22-month-old toddler in Londonderry last night was anything other than a tragic accident.”
