Third of drivers keen to cut car use

More than a third of drivers in the North are keen to use their cars less, but believe there are no real alternatives, according to research published today.

A study for the Energy Saving Trust revealed drivers in the North are increasingly concerned by the damage their vehicles inflict on the environment.

The trust survey – carried out to mark Green Transport Week which starts on Saturday – found that 56% of motorists are considering buying a ‘clean’ vehicle in the future and a further 36% would be willing to pay £50 (€73) to learn to drive more efficiently.

Siobhan Purnell, marketing manager of the Energy Saving Trust Advice Centre in the North, said the results of their investigation were encouraging.

“We understand that people need to use their cars, but with growing awareness of the effects of climate change, they want to use them in a more environmentally friendly way,” she said.

She added: “We recognise that buying a new car or using alternative modes of transport may not always be possible, so we want to show people that small changes to the way you drive can really help cut carbon dioxide emissions and save you money at the same time – up to £120 (€174) a year.”

During Green Transport Week, the Trust is urging people across Northern Ireland to fulfil their green driving ambitions by following three simple rules.

:: Check your speed – driving above 60mph pushes up the amount of fuel used considerably.

:: Switch it off – if stuck in traffic or waiting for someone for more than two minutes, it pays to turn off the engine.

:: Check tyre pressure – under-inflated tyres are not only dangerous but also increase the amount of fuel used.
