40,000 to turn out for charity run
Up to 40,000 women will join forces on the streets of Dublin today to raise millions of euro for charity.
The Women’s Mini Marathon – the biggest all women’s event of its kind in the world – begins at 3pm with runners, joggers and walkers completing the 10km course through the south of the city.
The event has grown steadily in numbers since it began in 1983, with its popularity increasing significantly. Over the years around 440,000 women have entered the event, raising €85m for charity. In 2005 alone more than €9m was collected.
Previous winners include acclaimed athletes Sonia O’Sullivan and Catherina McKiernan.
Motorists around the city are warned to expect major delays and diversions.
