Headstones hit by stolen car

A stolen car was used to damage headstones in a Belfast graveyard, it emerged tonight.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said the car was driven recklessly through the Belfast city cemetery on the Falls Road overnight.

A spokeswoman said 17 headstones had been badly damaged.

The stolen car was recovered but no arrests have been made.

Since Belfast City Cemetery opened in 1869, more than 250,000 people have been buried there.

Denis Donaldson, the Sinn Féin official who was murdered after he admitted being a British spy, was buried there last month.

The PSNI have appealed for anyone with information to come forward.
