Irish government welcomes Darfur peace deal
The Government has welcomed the new peace deal aimed at ending the conflict in the Sudanese province of Darfur.
Minister for Foreign Dermot Ahern said it provides the basis for a lasting and just settlement to the 'appalling human tragedy' in the region.
Three years of fighting has left tens of thousands dead and up to two million homeless.
The pact was signed by the Sudanese Government and the main rebel faction at peace talks in Nigeria.
Dermot Ahern said he hopes the two smaller rebel groups will also sign up to it.
