Roche rejects call for new PPS-based electoral register

Minister for the Environment Dick Roche has rejected calls for the introduction of a new electoral register based on PPS numbers.

Minister for the Environment Dick Roche has rejected calls for the introduction of a new electoral register based on PPS numbers.

The measure has been suggested as a possible way to tidy up inaccuracies in the official list of voters.

However, speaking in Dublin this morning, Mr Roche rejected the idea and said reform of the register was a matter for local authorities.

The minister was responding to a survey by Fianna Fáil supporters, which found that up to 15,000 people may be on the register in the Dublin South East constituency, despite being dead or no longer resident in the area.
