Temple Street Children's Hospital is today hoping to raise €100,000 to purchase equipment for its intensive care unit.

Inishmore island is to host a 13km mini-marathon in which more than 150 people are taking part.

The race will start at 11am today.

Temple Street’s Denise Fitzgerald says more than €1m is needed to adequately equip the unit.

The hospital, which cares for more than 123,000 children every year, often has to transfer emergency cases and terminally-ill youngsters to adult facilities because of lack of equipment.

Ms Fitzgerald says that many of these young children are then forced to compete with adults for use of equipment.
