Promotion for Dean of Cork

A replacement was tonight announced for Peter Barrett, who resigned as Bishop of Cashel and Ossory in January after separating from his wife.

The Very Rev Michael Burrows, the Dean of Cork, was elected for the post following a meeting of the Episcopal Electoral College in Christ Church Cathedral, in Dublin.

Michael Burrows, 45, was educated at Wesley College, Dublin and read History and Political Science at Trinity College.

Ordained in 1988, he served his curacy at Douglas Union with Frankfield (Cork) and became Dean of Residence at Trinity College Dublin in 1991 and Minor Canon at St Patrick’s Cathedral, Dublin.

In 1994 he moved back to Cork Diocese to be Incumbent of Bandon Union and in 1996 was appointed Canon at Cork and Cloyne Cathedrals.

In 2002 he was appointed Dean of Cork and Incumbent St Fin Barre’s Union.

Michael is married to Claire, who is a barrister and part-time lecturer in law at University College, Cork, and they have four children, Henry, Andrew, Grainne, and James.
