Survey finds concern about high crime rates
A survey commissioned by the Department of Justice has reportedly found widespread public anxiety about the levels of crime and public disorder in Ireland.
Reports this morning said 85% of respondents to the poll were worried about the issue, with two-thirds saying they believed crime had not fallen in the last 10 years.
The findings come just a day after the Taoiseach told the Dáil that Ireland's crime rate was declining and was the envy of other European countries.
Elsewhere, the Department of Justice poll found strong support for the proposed garda reserve and measures to get civilians to take over desk duties from trained gardaí.
Fine Gael TD Jim O'Keefe said the Government should respond by immediately completing this civilianisation process, as well as boosting overall garda numbers and providing the force with proper equipment and technology.
