A study led by two Irish doctors has identified the genetic mutation that causes dry skin and eczema.

The findings, which are being published in a US journal today, are regarded as the first step towards developing a possible cure for the condition.

The mutated gene in question is carried by around 10% of the population.

It was discovered during research led by Co Fermanagh dermatologist Alan Irvine, who works at Crumlin Children's Hospital in Du blin, and Co Antrim geneticist Irwin McLean, who is based in Scotland.
