Michael Smith to contest next election

Veteran Fianna Fáil TD Michael Smith has been selected to contest the next General Election.

He will stand for the party again in Tipperary North.

The 65-year-old former Minister for Defence resigned from the Cabinet two years ago over his opposition to hospital cutbacks proposed in the Hanly Report.

Mr Smith was first elected to the Dáil in 1969.
