Harney promises speedy closure for victims of Dr Neary

The Tánaiste and Minister for Health Mary Harney has vowed to bring closure to the victims of Dr Michael Neary as soon as possible.

Ms Harney agreed yesterday to set up a redress scheme to decide on compensation for 250 women who underwent needless surgery at the hands of the Drogheda obstetrician, including many who had their wombs unnecessarily removed.

However, she also said the Government wanted the insurers of Dr Neary and Lourdes Hospital to foot some of the compensation bill and it would take some time to obtain legal advice on the matter.

Asked about the matter in Dublin today, Ms Harney said complex issues were involved, but the Government was determined to do all it could for Dr Neary's victims.

"This has been going on now for eight years, they've waited a long time, it's been a very traumatic experience for all of them," she said.

"Clearly they want to move on with their lives. The sooner we can bring closure to this sad episode for them the better."
