The Minister for Social Affairs has published a new Bill that will bring in a number of key reforms and improvements in welfare entitlements.
The Bill will also reinforce protection and extend investigative powers in the pensions area.
Seamus Brennan says the new standard and improved measures to non-contributory pensions will bring 34,000 pensioners into a higher income bracket.
The new initiative will also see increases in social welfare payments for lone parents, widows and carers.
The names of pensions are also due to change; from old age pension to state pension, from disability to illness pension and from orphans to guardian’s pension.
Mr Brennan also said that the new reforms will abolish what was known as pre-retirement scheme, whereby anyone over 55 years of age was liable to face permanent unemployment.
Under the new conditions FÁS will negotiate with these people about employment opportunities.
