Derry: 400 workers to learn future of jobs

Four hundred workers at a chicken processing plant in Co Derry are due to find out today whether they have lost their jobs.

Management at the Farm Fed factory in Coleraine are expected to inform employees this afternoon that the company is facing major difficulties.

The difficulties are believed to have been caused by rising costs coupled with the importation of low-priced poultry from abroad.

Farm Fed, which processes poultry from around 60 farms in Co Derry, laid off 41 workers last year following a dip in orders, but there are now fears that the company could go out of business altogether.
