Garda patrols buying own torch batteries, claims unions

Gardaí are buying batteries for their own torches to patrol after dark, it was claimed today.

Meagre resources are also being blamed for a so-called brain-drain from the force, according to their union.

The Garda Representative Association said members are getting frustrated with the job and are leaving in droves.

The union, which represents over 10,000 rank and file officers, called on Justice Minister Michael McDowell to provide adequate resources to help its members do their jobs effectively.

“We have a brain drain of policing talent within the force as experienced officers are leaving in their droves, such are the demands placed on them,” a spokesman said.

“There is also a complete lack of backup and support for members.

“Gardaí cannot even get batteries for their torches unless they purchase them themselves,” he added.

The GRA has also called for personal protection devices like pepper spray cannisters to be mandatory for all gardai.

Officers currently operate on a 25-year-old analogue radio system but the GRA wants this to be updated with modern digital equipment.

“The minister has known about the crumbling, outdated communications system since he took office in 2002 but he only issued tenders for it recently,” the spokesman added.

The GRA is opposed to Mr McDowell’s plans for a Garda Reserve Force.

“he force is a complete red herring on behalf of the minister and his department to deflect attention away from the fact that they have failed to implement a programme for proper garda resourcing,” the spokesman concluded.
