A record number of houses and apartments were built in Ireland last year, according to figures published today by the Department of the Environment.

A record number of houses and apartments were built in Ireland last year, according to figures published today by the Department of the Environment.

The department said almost 81,000 new homes were constructed in 2005, almost 28,000 in the Greater Dublin area alone.
